We offer an extensive range of cosmetic dermatology procedures in additional to standard dermatologic care. Our cosmetic dermatology procedures are minimally invasive and require little, if any, downtime. Many procedures are complementary to each other, for example, Botox and soft-tissue fillers. Some patients may opt for a variety of procedures – and routine maintenance - to achieve the best result.

The following information is designed to provide a basic level of information about some of our cosmetic services. The right course of action for your particular situation will be determined upon consultation with Dr. Gendler or Dr. Hayag. Your doctor will thoroughly discuss all the treatment options available to you and, together, you can decide on the best program to meet your goals.

COSMETIC PROCEDURES AND REJUVENATION

• BOTOX

One of the most popular procedures we offer. Dr. Gendler is a leading expert in the use of Botox and frequently trains other physicians on its appropriate use. She is one of the physicians who helped formulate the consensus guidelines for Botox use. Botox (Botulinum Toxin Type A) is used for the treatment of frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet, neck lines, and even for migraine headaches. The agent is injected into the skin with a fine needle and works by paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles. No anesthesia is required although some patients may have the area to be injected numbed prior to the procedure. Some patients may experience a slight but temporary bruising at the injection site, but this is easily camouflaged with makeup. Botox treatment can last up to 4 to 6 months, but individual results vary.

• SOFT-TISSUE FILLERS

We offer a variety of dermal fillers to temporarily plump and smooth lines, creases, scars, depressions, and sunken areas of the face. We currently provide treatment with the following agents -

o CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast, the “new” Collagen, are soft-tissue fillers that offer the benefit of same-day treatment (for appropriate patients) as they do not require a skin test prior to use. CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast contain human collagen purified from human dermal tissue.

o Restylane (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid) is a natural substance that is used to provide volume and fullness to facial wrinkles, folds and lips. No skin-testing is necessary prior to use.

In the near future, pending FDA approval, we also expect to be offering treatment with the following new soft-tissue fillers -

o Hylaform is a modified form of hyaluronan, or hylauronic acid, a natural substance found in dermal tissue and throughout the body. With a few simple injections, hylaform can help to temporarily fill in and smooth away facial lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and other soft-tissue defects. It is less robust than Restylane and is useful in patients who are timid about their first experience with fillers. No skin-testing required prior to use.

o Juvéderm is a hyaluronic acid in the form of viscoelastic gel which comes in various sizes designed for use in different areas of the face. Like Restylane and Hylaform, Juvéderm is used for temporary wrinkle correction and soft tissue contouring. No skin-testing required prior to use.

• CHEMICAL PEELS

Chemical peels are designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, age spots, and uneven pigmentation. Peels can also be beneficial for acne and acne-related scarring. We provide alphahydroxy acid, betahydroxy acid, and trichloroacetic acid peels in varying concentrations. There is no recovery time associated with the lighter peels; however, some patients may require higher concentrations that would necessitate a brief recovery period. Other than some slight, temporary stinging, there is minimal discomfort associated with these procedures. Chemical peels are most commonly performed on the face, hands, arms and legs.

Some patients may require a series of treatments to achieve optimal improvement, and chemical peels can be combined with additional procedures such as Botox, soft-tissue fillers, and/or medicated lightening lotions.

• MICRODERMABRASION

For patients seeking to brighten and freshen the skin for a special occasion or as an add-on treatment as part of a facial rejuvenation program, microdermabrasion, or particle skin resurfacing, is a great option. The procedure involves an application of a spray of fine aluminum oxide crystals under pressure and vacuum. This painless procedure is safe for all skin types. It is particularly recommended for treating superficial age spots, problems associated with oily skin, and sun-damaged skin.

Microdermabrasion can be used very effectively on the neck and décolleté areas. The repeated process helps promote noticeable changes in the texture, color and appearance of skin.

Microdermabrasion is performed by our nursing staff under the direction of the physicians.

• NON-ABLATIVE LASER TREATMENTS

We have a variety of special new lasers to treat facial spider veins, red and brown spots, rosacea, uneven pigmentation and fine wrinkles. Non-ablative lasers work beneath the surface of the skin so that patients experience faster healing and few side effects. A series of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photofacials is a great option for patients seeking a safe and effective method of facial rejuvenation.

Our laser treatments can be used on the face, neck, chest and hands. These procedures are non-invasive and post laser discomfort is minimal. Your post-laser appearance will depend upon the type of treatment your doctor selects for your condition, but there is generally minimal to no downtime.

• LASER HAIR REMOVAL

We provide patients with a safe, non-invasive, and long-term solution to the removal of dark or unwanted hair with the LightSheer™ diode laser. Laser hair removal is appropriate for men and women, for all skin types and on all body parts. The procedure is painless and can be provided by a physician and/or a medically-supervised aesthetician or nurse. Specially priced treatment packages are available.

•SCLEROTHERAPY (VEIN TREATMENTS)

Sclerotherapy is the injection of varicose and spider veins with a sclerosing agent, such as saline or sotradecol, for the purpose of eradication of those vessels. Several treatment sessions are required; some patients respond quicker than others, and some vessels respond quicker than others. In general, three to five sessions are needed to effectively treat this condition. Minimal post-treatment bruising is normal and patients are also required to wear special stockings for one week.
